Princess Cruises Grand Princess on Fire Near Honolulu, Hawaii - November 30, 2015

On Monday, November 30, 2015 Princess Cruises Grand Princess experienced a switchboard malfunction sparked a small fire hours around 0530 hours while the cruise ship was sailing toward Hawaii, about 100 miles northeast of Hilo when the fire broke out in its engine room with approximately 2,600 passengers and 1,000 crew members aboard.

Grand Princess had embarked from San Francisco, California on Wednesday, November 25 and was on the fifth day of the 15-day cruise to Hawaii and Mexico when the electrical fire broke out.

According the United State Coast Guard (USCG),The fire caused Grand Princess to lose propulsion and electricity. Within an hour, the fire was

extinguish the fire, the engine was restarted and Grand Princess resume her voyage. Grand Princess docked in Honolulu Harbor on Tuesday for repairs.

Princess Cruises canceled the port calls to Nawiliwili and Lahaina for the rest of its Hawaii voyage, offering 2,592 passengers full refunds and airfare back to San Francisco.

Princess Cruises spokeswoman Karen Candy said, “We had technical experts join the ship yesterday to inspect all systems and verify the safety of the ship. Lloyd's Register reviewed all actions and cleared the ship to sail. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard has been involved throughout the process and has also cleared the ship to sail,” Candy said. “However, while there is no impact to maneuverability or safety, the ship cannot attain maximum speed therefore we must adjust the future itinerary.”

There was a report of a Grand Princess cruise ship fire previously, on March 31, 2008
Another Princess Cruises ship, Star Princess was ablaze, in Montego Bay, Jamaica and one man died aboard, Richard Liffridge, while Star Princess was enroute to Jamaica on March 23, 2006. The damage to the ship was severe, and thick black smoke billowed from that vessel as well.
