One Crew Member Dead in ship explosion. Chalmers, New Zealand – Around 5:00, on Thursday, February 9, 2017, Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess cruise had an explosion, which damaged the stern of the cruise ship. One crew member was killed during the explosion.
The explosion which was heard miles away, brought fears of a terror attack at the port. Early report say a 45kg gas bottle reportedly exploded and flew through the air.
The cruise ship was docked at Port Chalmers, a suburb and the main port of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand.
Carnival Australia communications manager David Jones said, “initial reports suggested the incident happened during technical work on the hydraulic launching system on a tender vessel.”
