Prime Time Cruise Ship Fire, Hartbeespoort Dam South Africa

The Prime Time is a party boat owned by Boaters World Adventures which is run by Nico Wessels. Prime Time books lunch, dinner, sunset and event cruises at Hartbeespoort Dam. There were 200 passengers and three crew members aboard when the fire took place just before lunch was to be served on November 19, 2016.

About 15 smaller private boats capable of transporting six to eight passengers came to assist.

Four women died during the fire. Gwen Mnguni died aboard and three women drown during the rescue attempt including Roselyn Molepi, Portia Gumede who died when an overloaded rescue boat capsized and a fourth woman drown after reportedly jumping off the burning boat. Her name has not been released.

Hartbeespoort Dam is an arch type dam situated in the North West Province of South Africa. It lies in a valley to the south of the Magaliesberg mountain range and north of the Witwatersberg mountain range, about 35 kilometers west of Pretoria.

South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) is investigating what caused the fire, which started in the rear of the boat where the kitchen, bathrooms and engines were situated.

The excursion boat offers two- and three-hour cruises which include three-course meals, a bar and music.
