Carnival Liberty Fire, Carnival Cruise Lines St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands – September 7, 2015, Monday, Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Liberty had a fire aboard the cruise ship while it was docked in St. Thomas USVI. The Carnival Liberty embarked from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday September 6 for a seven-night Southern Caribbean cruise with 3,346 cruise ship passengers and 1,150 cruise ship crew members aboard.
The fire was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system, Carnival said. Passengers and crew were evacuated ashore to the dock. No passenger or crew injuries were reported.
Port calls at Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and St. Maarten were canceled.
Passengers were compensated with $150 credit to spend on board and free transportation into town while fire investigators inspected Carnival Liberty. Carnival also issued full refunds to passengers, a 50% discount on a future cruise.
By Wednesday, Carnival Cruise Lines had begun flying passengers home
