Emerald Seas Explosion & Fire, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Bahamas – July 30, 1986 a fire broke out on the Eastern Cruise Lines Emerald Seas in the Bahamas, while the ship was anchored a few hundred yards off Little Stirrup Cay, a private island in the Bahamas used by the cruise line to entertain passengers.
Many passengers were in the process of tendering to the island or were waiting on deck to tender when the explosion occured. The captain made the decision to tender off all 900 passengers to the island in lifeboats as a precaution.
Six injured passengers were treated at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas.
The fire was caused by cleaning fluids that caught fire near an oxygen tank which then exploded on the Topez deck, the second of nine decks.
On the very next cruise, a toddler was murdered by her mother while aboard Emerald Seas.
